On April 5, 2025, Alexander Ovechkin tied the all-time goal scorer in the NHL, Wayne Gretzsky. The next day Alex Ovechkin broke the record for all time goals scored in a career with Ovechkin scoring number 895 versus the New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin at 7:26 in the 2nd period on a power play. Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th goal against the Islanders like Wayne Gretzky did when he made history, and they scored in the same amount of games 1,487. Sidney Crosby also broke one of Gretzky’s records this year, most season averaging points per game. Gretzky said in an interview that if Ovechkin scores 900 goals, he would buy Ovechkin a car.
